Easter was NOT good. Probably not for any of us: let's be honest. My amazing mother made Vegan brownies (i'll post her recipe up soon) in an attempt to cut out a giant "Egg" for me from the finished tin. That plan didn't really work so what resulted was a MOUND of delicious brownies in my pantry. Oh dear. Well, what can you do but eat them, right? Besides the brownies, I also had a lot of food. I went out do dinner with my wonderful friend and fellow vegan, Jenna, and we ate delicious turkish food with WHITE turkish bread (something I would never normally do) and gorged on hot chocolates and dark chocolate fondue afterwards. Needless to say: I spent most of Easter feeling pretty ill. My body was asking what it had done to deserve such punishment. I said "shut up body, enjoy your food!" Which, of course, it couldn't. My taste buds sure as hell did, but I certainly felt the negative side effects of chucking any kind of healthy eating out the window. A lot of people think being vegan goes hand-in-hand with being healthy. This is SO not true. If anything, you find it quite challenging, because whenever I see a vegan cake or something I feel like I have to buy it! "Gah! A vegan cake?! It must be mine!!" It's similar with shopping. One of my favourite online websites Modcloth had these amazing shoes the other day and I clicked on them just for shits and giggles and...oh yeah...."vegan". Written in black and white. After seeing that it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to not click "add to basket". IMPOSSIBLE. I resisted temptation because I in no way need new shoes right now, but it wasn't easy.
So, what did I do when I woke up Friday morning after my Easter Eat-a-thon, as I call it? I made myself an amazing, alkalising green juice! Cucumber, celery, kale and pear. Done. It tasted so amazing. I whipped out my copy of Crazy Sexy Diet and on the spot decided to do Kris Carr's cleanse. Oh yeah. It's great when you feel so motivated. When you WANT to be healthy. Your body is just crying out for it. You feel sugared out and bloated and you just want some healthy veggies in you.
I'm now on day 5 and it's been the easiest cleanse I've ever done. There's nearly no effort involved this time! My motivation is unfailing and I wanted to write today, particularly about how "goodness fuels goodness". I think we all have some kind of experience with this. When I'm eating healthy, I feel great. When I feel great I want to do great things. I want to spend my afternoon off going for a realaxing walk, or calling up my grandma, who I haven't spoken to in years. I want to play with my dog. I want to sit down and write my blog. I want to go and clean my room and re-organise all the crap in there.
When I am eating crap: I feel like crap. All I want to do is eat more crap, curl up on the sofa and watch TV. It's true. Even vegans are victims of the "I"m crap" syndrome. We just don't have the guilt of being full of dead animals.... (oh no she didn't!)
Today, being day 5, I've worked for nine hours, come home and done chores, including very mundaine "to do list" things, gone for an hour long walk/jog/exercise sesh in the park, climbed a few trees and cooked dinner for the family. And I still feel bursting with energy.
There is no doubt in my mind that living on a completely healthy, as "raw" as possible diet is the best way to feel healthy, clean and energised. I work with coffee, so that's probably the most challenging thing to cut out, but god I feel better not having it in my system. It's an amazing feeling to go to bed and say "God, I feel amazing today. Everything I put in my body served a purpose and WANTED to be in there. Everything served me and made me better and healthier."
Here is a blow by blow of the Kris Carr 30 Day cleanse for anyone wanting to try:
No animal products
Green juice whenever possible; she wants you to have one every morning for breakfast. (You really do need to own a juicer to do this cleanse)
Lemon and Hot water when you wake up.
35 minutes of any kind of exercise a day.
Try and spend at least 5 minutes a day in nature.
Stop eating 3 hours at least before bed.
As much raw, living food as possible.
So, to someone who is currently living on a Standard American Diet, or even a Standard Australian Diet, that could sound like a damn daunting cleanse and far too hard. But for anyone who has already taken steps to be healthier, they would know it's actually not that difficult at all.
Here's what I've eaten today:
Up: Lemon Hot Water
Breakfast: Cucumber, celery, kale and pear juice
Lunch: Lettuce, spinach, tomato, cucumber, brazil nut, olive oil and pumpkin seed salad.
Snack: Banana, 2 dates, flaxseed and chia seed smoothie
Dinner: Roast Pumpkin, Roast sweet potato and a giant green salad.
If I feel perky later I may have a cup of Vegan hot chocolate made with Bonsoy and my Loving Earth Raw Chocolate spread. Naughty!
The best thing about this cleanse is that you don't have to really worry about WHAT you're eating or how much or calories or any of that crap. It fits a basic criteria: is this on the Kris Carr list of alkalising foods? Okay, fantastic. I can eat as much of it as I want. Is it acidic? Well, I can only have a little bit. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full. Never feel guilty about food! Use it to fuel your body and live a life of happy abundance and health!
