These days, I cannot complain in the slightest. I'm as happy as a clam.
You may remember a while ago I was feeling a bit low. I'm a creative person and absolutely nothing creative was happening in my life. For anyone reading who paints, writes, performs or plays... you'll know what I'm talking about. If you cannot spend much time doing the thing you love - you start to feel it draining your soul a little.
Thankfully, that is no longer the case! I put it out into the universe "MAKE ME BUSY!", got my butt in gear, went to a million auditions and happily I am insanely busy again. I'm rehearsing with a wonderful new theatre company called 1956 Theatre on some brilliant new plays and have some other projects on the go!
This Sunday I'm doing a day of filming for a music video and I'm even playing Linda Lovelace in a new play being performed in November. I may include some photos in this post if I'm feeling bold ;)
What I'm trying to say is - I'm bloody busy again. Busy, busy and I love it. The down side is, it's harder to set an entire day aside to make food and do amazing food photography and have my blog being at the standard I like... but that will not last long, I promise!
What I love about these times, is that I am not living in the "ideal" way of making every single meal I eat, having enough money to buy the best kinds of food or even sleeping enough, if I'm honest. I am working less to make time for rehearsal, which makes me pretty broke and means a lot of food I'm eating is cheap, convenient and a bit samey. My Instagram has never been so bloody boring. Follow me anyway!! ;)
So many people seem to think being vegan is more expensive. Is it BALLS! I have to laugh when I hear these things. Being vegan is no more expensive than any other diet or lifestyle - you are just choosing to spend money on one thing instead of another. In what universe are mushrooms more expensive than chicken? Sure if you want to buy mountains of organic fresh fruit and veg every day, that's expensive, but when you're a struggling actress like myself, this just will not be the case.
So, how do I do it? How am I still eating, sleeping, walking, talking and thriving as a broke, penniless vegan actress? Well, here are the secrets....
Thank God For Oats
And on the seventh day.... God created Oats.
Because he was awesome and he didn't want us to eat the animals. And he knew one day we would have to pay for everything and Oats would always stay cheap.
I'm not religious. But whoever did discover Oats - thank you. You have saved my life. The best, best, best thing about Oats is that they are HEALTHY AND CHEAP. Healthy and CHEAP! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm not-too-ashamed to admit that I'm literally eating Porridge or Overnight Oats nearly every day at the moment.... some evenings, if I'm exhausted and haven't eaten enough in the day, I may even make myself a late night bowl of porridge and sit, relaxing for a little bit.
I always have Oats in my flat. The most convenient way to have them at the moment is Overnight Oats, so I can just eat them on the go!
God Also Created Bananas
I am so sorry, I don't know why I keep talking about God .. but it seems appropriate to praise something holy for Bananas.
Again - healthy and cheap! Massive staple in my life. Bananas don't have to be bought Organic because they have a nice, thick skin and you can buy them in bulk, fairly cheaply and leave them to ripen. I usually include some banana in my oats and have bananas handy as a snack during rehearsal too.
HIGH CALORIE SNACKS
It's so important to get the bang for your buck when you have very few bucks.
For rehearsals - I've been snacking on dates and figs to get me through, as I know they will give me enough energy to get through till dinner time and I won't feel remotely deprived! This tiny bag of figs (only 250g) is a whopping 1000 calories (THAT'S A GOOD THING.) Some people may hear that and freak out - but I promise - if you're a vegan and an ACTIVE vegan and if you're eating mostly fruit and veg - you want massive calories. You need to feel energized and good.
Figs ain't gonna make you fat ;)
Free Transport :)
Have you met my beautiful new bike? Her name is Goldie and she means I now spend ZERO on transport. This has completely changed my life. Goldie means I'm accidentally exercising, am covered in bruises and spending even less money.
Simple is GOOD
Don't be afraid of simple food... especially if you're broke! As long as what you're putting in is good and healthy and you're eating until you're satisfied, don't get weighed down thinking you need Quinoa every day or green super drinks or anything else fancy. These things are obviously good, but it's unrealistic to set such high expectations for yourself every single day. If I can only afford potatoes, then I will eat an epic meal of potatoes and that's okay! Try and get some salad in, but don't stress about what's on your plate if the basics are healthy. Stress can be just as harmful as dairy ;)
Some people live on chip sandwiches and coca-cola. If you're eating fresh vegetables, you're already doing a lot better than most of the population!
If You Need Fast Food - There ARE Good Options
Sometimes when finishing late - cooking an epic dinner just isn't an option, sadly. Rest assured - I would SO MUCH RATHER cook every single meal I eat, as you all know, but this isn't a bad back-up-plan is it? I am lucky to live in a big city that has options like this, so hopefully you have things similar. There are a few amazing "fast food" Falafel joints in Manchester and they make epic salads like this for a mere 4 pounds. Nod bad, hey?
I am Happy
Always the most important thing, of course :)
If you are happy and doing what you want to do, then you will always make it work. Being vegan makes me happy, eating vegan food makes me healthy and I will never compromise on those things, no matter how broke I am. Nearly everywhere you go for a "quick" option, you can find SOMETHING vegan and chances are it'll be better for you than the non-vegan versions!
Here's a sneaky rehearsal shot ... because I'm feeling generous.... ;)
Fact: The way humans are currently living on this planet is unsustainable.
Fact: the world's consumption of meat and dairy is one of the major contributors to our planet's environmental problems.
This morning - I read this article about how meat and dairy consumption HAS to drop if we have any hope of a sustainable future. Most people sort of know this already - some accept it and go vegan, others question it and try to find other reasons for the problem and the rest just simply do not know. Blissful, blissful ignorance drowned in double cream.
Those who question it are the ones who drive me insane.
People are DESPERATE to disprove this and find ways to skirt around it just so they can keep eating freaking cheeseburgers.
Is it really so hard to believe that it's UNSUSTAINABLE to factory farm billions of animals? BILLIONS of animals that shit, eat, fart, drink water and need to be transported across country?! Is it REALLY so hard to believe that is unsustainable practice? Not to mention powering the factory farms that tear them to pieces? That are strategically placed in far away places out of your sight - using so much power and energy? That it takes food and water to birth, grow and house a cow - just so that we can then eat that cow? Cow flesh that doesn't even do us any real good - just clogs our arteries and contributes to various diseases and ailments?
WHY ARE HUMANS SO STUPID AND SET IN THEIR WAYS?
I read through the comments on this article (I don't know why I do things that I know will make me mad) and most people, surprise surprise, are trying to DEBUNK the article with their own stupid, narrow-minded views that are BASED ON NOTHING. It's insulting and ludicrous. I feel this way about climate-change debates as well; when people fob-off studies conducted hard-working, dedicated scientists that are just DELIVERING FACTS. These scientists have given so much time to collect data and statistics to help us understand what is happening to our planet. These scientists aren't working for the Carrot Mafia. Or the Sustainability Illuminati. THEY ARE FUCKING SCIENTISTS! THEY ARE INTERESTED IN FACTS! The corruption to look out for and question - is when people are profiting and making money (or just when Rupert Murdock is involved). The overwhelming majority of scientists are proving that our planet is warming and this is a serious problem. What are they met with? IGNORANT MEAT-HEADS! People who say "I don't care about your science! My back yard is fucking freezing! It's the coldest year we've ever had. Stupid scientist."
What really gets my blood boiling is that people can read articles like this as some kind of personal attack, or threat. When I was faced with the reality of animal agriculture - my first thought wasn't "I'm NOT a bad person for eating meat! How dare this person tell me I'm a bad person for eating meat!" My first thoughts were "Oh my God - I had no idea. I can't keep doing this. Those poor animals... that's awful industries..."
But maybe I'm just a big old softie. Vegans are all weak, didn't you know?
Yep - vegan... ;) http://veganweightlifting.com/
The main comments on the BBC article are along the lines of" "the problem is population control, not diet." No one is debating the fact that our population is completely out of control, of course it is. I have no plans to have children and more people my age should probably think about that.
But really - we are a bit powerless about that at the moment. Who knows how far away we are from being able to successfully exercise population control? We don't know when the zombie apocalypse will hit. We don't know when we will find a new planet. All we know is - we are here now and we are FUCKED. So - the truth is - you can take your sarky comment and shove it where the sun don't shine - because it's IRRELEVANT. Deal with the FACTS. The here and now. We are here and now we have to take action and one of the SIMPLEST, easiest, most logical things anyone could do is TO STOP EATING MEAT.
STOP! Stop you damn crack addict. Stop. How many times do you have to hear that red meat isn't good for you? How many times do you have to hear that your fish is loaded with mercury and all the fish are dying out? How many times do you have to hear that cheese is probably the worst thing anyone can eat (along with high-fructose corn syrup) before you think: oh... DING... light bulb.... I have POWER. I am in control. I can decide not to do these things and it's not remotely hard.
(I've had a coffee writing this, by the way... feeling a little edgy.)
Do you see what I'm saying though? Your comment is irrelevant. And - just to further shoot you down - if our wold was on a plant-based diet -the population wouldn't be so much of a problem. In fact - there have been numerous studies and articles that say our planet can actually support a population of this size if we lived in a more sustainable way. Number ONE being: DIET. Plant based diet - we feed the world.
Greed is the problem... not numbers. There is enough for everyone we just need to learn how to FUCKING SHARE. You learned when you were a child, didn't you? Didn't you hear that thing about sharing? Helping out the needy? Not having absolutely everything you want all the time because life doesn't work that way? You can't buy the new barbie doll because Mum has to pay for that and you can't always get what you want?
Well - we are entering a time where cheeseburgers may just become a luxury. Oh the irony. And meat SHOULD be a fucking luxury... not on your damn sandwich three times a day! Obviously it's my opinion meat should be flat-out banned and we should leave animals the hell alone and maybe our planet's ecosystems and natural habitats can have a chance of restoring themselves, but I know most people won't be forced into vegetarianism. But can you AT LEAST be forced to cut the hell down? See meat as a luxury as it should be! Not yours to just have whenever you feel like it. We used to hunt animals - you used to have to skin them and look at the raw flesh and take out the eye balls and the livers. Now - you just walk into a supermarket and have your fill. It's sickening. And we wonder why there's a problem? There's too much meat. Too much. Do some googling, look at the evidence and PLEASE... I'm begging you... cut down. Maybe on your path to cutting down you will also find some compassion for these animals and agree they should not be factory farmed like they are being.....
The best way? Humans - eat plants. Farm sustainably. Use land to grow crops that don't go into cows mouths - but into humans mouths. Cut out the middle man.
Is your brain melting with the logic?
